Modesty is not just about the way you dress; it also includes the way you carry yourself, the way you talk, the way you walk, and the way you treat others. You can wear a long dress and still be loudmouthed; you can wear skirts and still be very rude. Don’t get me wrong, the way we dress is very important, but how we act is just as important, if not more important, than what we wear.
When we walk into a room, we want our character to match our appearance, beautiful, meek, and quiet. In this day and age, many women are too busy trying to be “boss women,” saying things like “women rule” or “we don’t need men.” This mindset goes against the Bible. We, as women, are not called to lead but to be led; not to control, but to help.
We are called to have a meek and quiet spirit, and to be modest in all our actions. When you go to choose your outfit for the day, pray and ask God to clothe you with a meek and quiet spirit. Pray for humility. Pray that God will lead you in knowing when to speak and when to remain silent. If we truly do this, we will realize the peace that comes with following the plan God has set for us as young ladies.
Our goal should not be to be seen, heard, or noticed. Our goal is to shine for Christ so that when others look at us, they see Him as we reflect His character. As daughters of the King, we are to represent our Father.
So the question is: Who are you representing?
“Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”
—1 Peter 3:3–4 (KJV)
